History of the Sheriff

As the sheriff of Bourbon County, it my mission to maintain Social Order and provide Professional Law Enforcement Services to the citizens in this community, within prescribed ethical, budgetary, and constitutional constraints.  While under my leadership and direction, this agency will strive to enforce the law and maintain order in a fair and impartial manner while recognizing the need for justice and consistent appearance of justice.  I recognize that there is no law enforcement agency that can operate at its maximum potential without supportive input from the citizens it serves.   This agency actively solicits and encourages the cooperation of all citizens to reduce and limit the opportunities for crime and to assist in bringing to justice those that break the law.

Sheriff Bill Martin has served in the law enforcement field for 27 years.  Sheriff Martin has worked for the Fort Scott Kansas Police Department,  The Bourbon County Kansas Sheriff’s Office, Pittsburg Kansas Police Department, and the Kansas City Missouri Police Department before returning to the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Office in 2009.

Sheriff Martin served as the Undersheriff to Sheriff Ron Gray and was appointed Sheriff after Ron Gray resigned in 2013.     Sheriff Martin has been the Sheriff of Bourbon County Kansas since 2013.

Sheriff martin has served on active duty with the U.S. Army and the Kansas National Guard.   During Sheriff Martin’s military career he attended the Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) and the Basic Non-Commissioned Leadership Course (BNOC).

Sheriff Martin has attended Fort Scott Community College, Pittsburg State University, and Missouri Southern State University where he completing his Graduates Degree in Criminal Justice.    He is also an adjunct instructor with Fort Scott Community College and serves on the Criminal Justice Advisory Board.

Sheriff Martin believes in serving the community.  The Sheriff’s office participates in the following programs    Seatbelts are for Everyone (SAFE), Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.), Prescription Drug Take-Back Program,  BSNF Operation Life Saver, I-Dent Program in partnership with Mercy Hospital Health Care. and the Special Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.).
